Map & Details:

Exercise Area: No
------------------------
Take 96R at Diamond Hill MTR station, drop off at Pak Tam Au.The trail head is on your right, across the road.
There are toilets there shall you need them before you start. Have a quick look at my map. Not too hard to get your bearing. That is Maclehose section 2 by the way.

First fork, go right.

Then a left towards Chek Keng

At Chenk Keng, hang right. The path on the left goes to goes to the pier and the youth hostel

Between milestone M40 and M39, about an hour in, you'll reach a little pavilion and a bench. That's where you break-off of Mac 2 and go up towards Sharp Peak. This is where the fun begins. You just have to follow the most direct path to the peak, Can't miss it. And yes, those steep patches are to be climbed...

Top of Sharp Peak

On the way back down, you can bypass the last steep pitch. From the top, just continue opposite from where you came from. It is a lot less steep. Then, you get to this point, turn right, and you'll be back to the trail. (We actually just went down the same way we came up)

Then, instead of taking the same route back down, you will keep left on the mountain spine which goes right in between the leftmost beach (East beach) and Tai Long Wan.

Only when you have reached the last hill does the path fork. East Beach to the left, and Tai Long Wan to the right. Take a right.

Just keep going down towards Tai Long Wan. When you are there, walk about halfway through the beach. You will see an opening in the bushes on your right which you will take. The path will lead you to Ham Tin beach. (The next beach on the picture above, after the hill)

Ham Tin Wan. Take a break , enjoy some food and refreshments. You can rent all sorts of beach gear at the store. If you are too tired to keep walking, you can talk to the store manager and book a boat back for about $150 per person. I personally think it's better to keep going and take the boat at the Sha Tau Pier which is cheaper ($20) and will be going by a fishing village.

Once you are done soaking the sun at the beach, just zip through the store to the back and head left at the crossroad, following the path made of pavers.

Just keep following the path for about 3km. After about 2km, you will have looped back to the junction where you climbed up to Sharp Peak. Unless you decide to go for another round, just keep going straight.

You'll get to those stairs at Maclehose milestone M042 (you see it on the left on the picture). Take them and you'll get to the Chek Keng pier.
There are speedboats to take you to Wong Shek pier. $150 to charter one. Wait a few minutes for other hikers to join and make it cheaper (usually $20)

High Island Reservoir (萬宜水庫; maan6 ji4 seoi2 fu3) to Sai Kung beaches

Duration:
13km (4.5 hours)

Difficulty:
6/10. 568m elevation gain. Sun exposed throughout

Cel phone coverage: Partial.

Water needs: 1.5 liter.

Appreciation: 10/10. Best combination of beaches and mountain views. Hong Kong Geopark at the beginning. Fishing villages at the end.

Exercise Area: No

Transportation: Take a taxi in Sai Kung, in front of the 7-11 and ask the driver to get you to High Island Reservoir Return to Sai Kung via bus 92 at Wong Chek pier, or bus 94 all the way to Diamond Hill on Sundays & public holidays.

Why it's worth it:

-----------------------------------------
High Island Reservoir (萬宜水庫; maan6 ji4 seoi2 fu3). This is where the cab will drop you off. You can spend a bit of time going down to check-out the Hong Kong GeoPark's rock formations. When done, head left to the trail.

About 35 minutes later, you will arrive at the first beach, Long Ke Wan. Keep going on the path which has been a bit beaten up by typhoon Mankut. The trail goes up the mountain and you'll get this view of Long Ke Wan if you look back

About 4km and 1.5 hour into your hike, you'll reach this point where you can admire, in order, Sai Wan, Ham Tin, and Tai Long beaches...

You will then hike back down for another 40 minutes to this crossroad with a map. Head right and down towards Sai Wan

Sai Wan (little beach)

The path going up after Sai Wan is quite clearly demarcated.
You may want to cross the bridge on the left if water level is high
After 8km and 3.5 hours, you'll be about at this point, overlooking the wonderful Ham Tin beach!

Rest for a while at Ham Tin beach, have a bit to eat, then when done, go through the store and head on the path to the left. Then just follow the path for about another 50 minutes (3km)

Exactly at trail marker M042 (encircled on the picture), you will see stairs on your right. Take them and follow the path to the Sha Tau pier. You can take a fast boat to Wong Shek pier where the bus terminus back to Sai Kung is.

Stanley to Quarry Bay via Tai Tam and Mount Parker

Duration:
(13 kilometers)
4 hours

Difficulty: 5/10. Quite easy and shaded throughout. Elevation gain is very progressive. A nice walk on a hot summer day or at anytime you want to go for a nice easy walk. Still 13k so if you never hiked, might be long-ish

Cel phone coverage: Everywhere

Water needs: 1.5 liter

Appreciation: 7/10. Bring your swimming attire as there's a nice little detour to the Tai Tam mound waterfall (9/10 with the waterfall break).

Transportation: Get to Stanley Plaza via various buses (6, 6X, etc). Ends at Quarry Bay MTR

Why it's worth it:

---------------------------------------
Exit at the Stanley Plaza bus stop and trace back from where the bus came from (Carmel Road).

After about 250m, you'll have a path on the right through the woods. Take it.

Just out of the woods and at the junction, head left on Repulse Bay Road. Stay on the sidewalk on the left as there's no sidewalk on the right and it could be dangerous

Look for the bus stop on the right, a few hundred meters in. Cross the road and take the stairs.

Our fashionable model Anthony shows us the stairs. He sports a pre-33 degrees/85% humidity hike smile! At the top of the stairs, head left on the water catchment path (The Twins Catchwater).

After about 1.5/2 km on the catchwater, you'll get here, at the intersection of the Wilson trail. Cross the bridge and head left towards Tai Tam reservoir.

Junction at the reservoir, head left on Tai Tam Reservoir Road.

Walk on Tai Tam Reservoir Road until you reach a path on your right (Hong Kong Trail Section 6). That's the little refreshing detour.
Walk until you see a small wooden bridge. There's somewhat of a path on the right going down in the bushes (on the right side from where you came from, left side from the bridge). Go down that path. Be careful. Then at the bottom, the waterfall is on the left.

Clear water for a swim. Nice area for a picnic. Once you are done, trace your steps back to the road

At the road, head right. You can follow either MT Parker Road or Hong Kong trail Section 6, they get to the same place.

If you followed HK Trail Section 6, head right at the junction on the island

Top of Mt Parker. Head right. Go all the way down on Mt Parker Rd to King's Road in Quarry Bay. Turn left on King's Road and the Quarry Bay MTR is about 200m onto King's Road
