------------------------
Take 96R at Diamond Hill MTR station, drop off at Pak Tam Au.The trail head is on your right, across the road.
There are toilets there shall you need them before you start. Have a quick look at my map. Not too hard to get your bearing. That is Maclehose section 2 by the way.

First fork, go right.

Then a left towards Chek Keng

At Chenk Keng, hang right. The path on the left goes to goes to the pier and the youth hostel

Between milestone M40 and M39, about an hour in, you'll reach a little pavilion and a bench. That's where you break-off of Mac 2 and go up towards Sharp Peak. This is where the fun begins. You just have to follow the most direct path to the peak, Can't miss it. And yes, those steep patches are to be climbed...

Top of Sharp Peak

On the way back down, you can bypass the last steep pitch. From the top, just continue opposite from where you came from. It is a lot less steep. Then, you get to this point, turn right, and you'll be back to the trail. (We actually just went down the same way we came up)

Then, instead of taking the same route back down, you will keep left on the mountain spine which goes right in between the leftmost beach (East beach) and Tai Long Wan.

Only when you have reached the last hill does the path fork. East Beach to the left, and Tai Long Wan to the right. Take a right.

Just keep going down towards Tai Long Wan. When you are there, walk about halfway through the beach. You will see an opening in the bushes on your right which you will take. The path will lead you to Ham Tin beach. (The next beach on the picture above, after the hill)

Ham Tin Wan. Take a break , enjoy some food and refreshments. You can rent all sorts of beach gear at the store. If you are too tired to keep walking, you can talk to the store manager and book a boat back for about $150 per person. I personally think it's better to keep going and take the boat at the Sha Tau Pier which is cheaper ($20) and will be going by a fishing village.

Once you are done soaking the sun at the beach, just zip through the store to the back and head left at the crossroad, following the path made of pavers.

Just keep following the path for about 3km. After about 2km, you will have looped back to the junction where you climbed up to Sharp Peak. Unless you decide to go for another round, just keep going straight.

You'll get to those stairs at Maclehose milestone M042 (you see it on the left on the picture). Take them and you'll get to the Chek Keng pier.
There are speedboats to take you to Wong Shek pier. $150 to charter one. Wait a few minutes for other hikers to join and make it cheaper (usually $20)

Po Lam to HKUST North Gate, then Pak Shui Wun (白水碗 ) waterfall and beach, looping back to HKUST North Gate.

Duration: 5 kilometers (2 hours)

Difficulty: 3/10. 250m elevation gain.

Cel phone coverage: Everywhere

Water needs: 0.5 liter. 85% shaded.

Appreciation: 5/10. Meh.

Transportation: MTR to Po Lam (Exit 'C'), return via any of the many buses and mini buses at HKUST North Gate.

Why it's worth it:

Map & Details:

Exercise Area: No
---------------------------------------
Right off of Po Lam exit 'C', head right.
Then right again at the end of May Yip road and onto Po Fung road. Take the pedestrian tunnel under Yan King road.

Next big road is Po Lam, cross it, then head left for about 200m, along Po Lam road.

You will then reach this point where you will see stairs going up on your right and a path off the sidewalk. Take the path and go up the stairs.

About 300m from the road, you will get to this point. Take a right

(There's a bench right at the junction)

Left and up.

Keep a left.

You'll reach this point with a metal railing. Head right and down.
You will reach Clear Water Bay road. Head left on Clear Water Bay Road.

Then first right, crossing Clear Water Bay road and onto Ngan Yin road.

About 5 minutes later, you will reach the HKUST South Gate.
Bus terminus will be on your left...

There is a path in between the fences on the South side of the bus terminus that will follow along the campus grounds, as you are not allowed on campus unless invited.

The path, go right.

Then down and right.

The path that follows along the West side of the campus grounds

You eventually get here, to the HKUST North gate. Take the path to the left which goes down and under the bridge. That's the start of the Pak Shui Wun loop.

Keep your attention on the left as you go down the path, where you will see the Pak Shui Wun waterfalls. There is no 'official' way to get closer to the falls for a better view.

Left and down here.

The path is a few meters before the bridge, on the right.

Left

Left again.

Another left.

Then at the top, as you reach the village, you will see a set of metal railings lining a path on your left. Take that path.

The path brings you back on University road. Take a left and you will be back at HKUST North Gate in less than 5 minutes where you can have a number of bus options to get wherever you want.

Middle Dog's Teeth (中狗牙)

Duration: 6.5 kilometers (4 hours)

Difficulty: 8/10. 711m elevation gain. There's scrambling so if you are afraid of heights, not a good one for you! While it is technically easier than West Dog Teeth, I rate it the same because the path is more sandy and therefore more slippery which, to me, makes it more treacherous.

Cel phone coverage: Everywhere

Water needs: 1.5 liter. 10% shaded.

Appreciation: 9/10. Scenic, although less so than West Dog Teeth.

Transportation: MTR to Tung Chung, then bus #11 or #23 (gets quite busy on weekends). Or ferry to Mui Wo, then bus #1 or #2. Get off at "Shek Pik Police Station" (Police stand. Right before the dam. Or, next one right after the dam if you missed it. There are toilets right after the dam)
Return via various buses at Big Buddha or via cable car to Tung Chung.

Why it's worth it:

Map & Details:

Exercise Area: No
---------------------------------------
Get off at "Shek Pik Police Station" (police stand). That's the stop right before the Shek Pik reservoir.

From the stop, retrace your step in the direction the bus came from (so, opposite the dam). There's a sidewalk all the way on the left.

After about 500m, you'll arrive at the Country Park entrance.
Go past the barrier and keep walking towards the first bridge, about 100m away

Take the bridge and just follow the path. There's no really any other way but for the well delimited path

Some stairs... keep going... the path will meander.

About 25-30 minutes into the hike (1.4km), you will reach this point. Pay attention to the signage, as well as the trees. To the right is the start of Middle Dog's Teeth.

Then it is quite straightforward, just follow the dirt path all the way to the point where you will meet West Dog's Teeth (pointed by left-most arrow). That is the "scary" bit. There's a chain to help you down. Afterwards, it is the same ending as West-Dog.

This is the rock formation that will mark the end of your climb for today.

About 4km/2h30min in, you are virtually done climbing (just a tiny bit more, and easy).
Keep going towards the top, don't take the path that is going down. The rock that you see up at a distance (The Bird Rock)...

... is this rock. You are done climbing. And you are now on Lantau trail.
The stairs on your left will lead you to Ngong Ping, the end of your trip. There are a lot of stairs though...

Almost at the end. Go straight

Budha in sight. Buses and the cable-car are not far behind.
A superb trail!
